BOSTON, Mass.-- Sophomore Stephanie Zito (Guilford, Conn.) scored 15 points, while senior Katie Castignetti (Braintree, Mass.) added 11 points, four rebounds and four assists as Suffolk extended its winning streak to five straight with a 65-34 Great Northeast Athletic Conference women’s basketball victory over Rivier Saturday afternoon at Regan Gymnasium.
The host Rams (8-4, 3-0 Great Northeast) used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to snap a 13-13 tie and take a 23-13 advantage on a lay-in by junior Emily Duquette (Harrisville, R.I.) with 5:19 to play before intermission, as Suffolk outscored the visiting Raiders (5-9, 0-3 Great Northeast) by a 20-7 margin over the final 10:19 of the half to take a 33-20 lead at the break. The hosts scored 16 of the first 19 points in the second half, holding Rivier to just one field goal in the first 12 minutes of play in building a 49-23 edge on a pair of free throws by junior Kerry Bowman (Guilford, Conn.) with 10:34 remaining in the contest, as the rams extended that margin to as many as 33 points in the closing minutes of play.
Bowman and fellow junior Meghan Tracey (Rehoboth, Mass.) each netted eight points in the win for Suffolk, which also received six points each from Duquette and seniors Stephanie Morrissey (Abington, Mass.) and Katlyn Klecha (Fairfield, Conn.). Morrissey grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for the Rams, who also received six boards each from Tracey and sophomore Laura Thompson (Kennebunk, Maine) as part of a 47-43 advantage on the glass for the day. The hosts shot 37 percent from the field and held a 14-4 scoring edge at the foul line while converting 31 Raider turnovers (that featured 20 steals) into 24 points.
Freshman Steph Adams (Nashua, N.H.) paced Rivier in the scoring column with nine points, while sophomores Blair Carpenter (Meredith, N.H.) and Alex Huffman (North Hampton, N.H.) added eight and seven points, respectively, for the visitors. Junior Peggy Dalton (Amherst, N.H.) scored five points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for the Raiders, who shot just 26 percent from the field and committed 19 of their 31 turnovers in the second half of action.
Suffolk hosts Simmons in a Great Northeast outing on Monday afternoon at Regan Gymnasium beginning at 5:00 p.m., while Rivier heads to New Haven, Conn. on Monday afternoon to take on Albertus Magnus in a Great Northeast match-up that begins at 1:00 p.m.
