FINAL:  TUFTS 5, SUFFOLK 1

MALDEN, Mass.--  Senior Greg O’Connell (Cohasset, Mass.) scored a pair of goals to lead Tufts to a 5-1 non-league college ice hockey victory over Suffolk Tuesday evening at the Malden Forum.

Markers off the sticks of sophomores Cory Korchin (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and Joe Rosano (Cohasset, Mass.) that came 31 seconds apart late in the opening period enabled the host Jumbos (5-6-1) to overcome senior Dan Pencinger’s (Randolph, N.J.) goal that had given the visiting Rams (7-7) the early lead, and tallies by O’Connell and junior Greg McCarthy (Medfield, Mass.) in the middle frame extended Tufts’ lead to 4-1 after 40 minutes of action.  O’Connell provided some insurance for the hosts with just under eight minutes remaining in the contest with his second goal of the night to account for the final score.

McCarthy finished with a goal and an assist for the winners, who also received a pair of helpers each off the sticks of seniors Kurt Hertzog (Long Beach, Calif.) and Ross Gimbel (Ann Arbor, Mich.) as well as freshman Lindsay Walker (Castlegar, B.C.).  Freshmen Andy Davis (Woburn, Mass.), Justin Mitchell (Darien, Conn.) and Dylan Cooper (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also notched single assists for Tufts, while sophomore Brian Smusz (Daleville, Va.) and freshman Paul Weisser (Longmeadow, Mass.) assisted on Pencinger’s tally for Suffolk.

Senior James Kalec (East Amherst, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal for Tufts with a 37-save effort, while freshman Jeff Rose (Collinsville, Conn.) made 40 saves for the third time in four outings in the setback for Suffolk, which also received four stops over the final 5:54 from sophomore Bill Gilbert (Forestdale, Mass.) as the Jumbos outshot the Rams by a 49-38 margin for the contest.

Suffolk hosts Assumption in an ECAC Northeast outing on Thursday evening at Walter Brown Arena beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Tufts hosts Skidmore in an ECAC East match-up on Friday evening at the Malden Forum that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
