FINAL: SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE 4, SUFFOLK 3 (OVERTIME)
BOSTON, Mass.-- Sophomore John Frey’s (Westminster, Colo.) goal 2:15 into overtime lifted Southern New Hampshire to a 4-3 non-league college ice hockey victory over Suffolk in consolation round play of the 43rd Annual Codfish Bowl Tournament Saturday afternoon at UMass Boston’s Clark Athletic Center.
Frey converted passes from senior Brandon Hammermeister (Calgary, Alta.) and sophomore Ryan DiBartolomeo (Leominster, Mass.) on the game-winner for the Penmen (7-2-1), who overcame a two-goal deficit after the first period of play. Senior Dan Pencinger (Randolph, N.J.) staked the Rams (7-6) to an early 1-0 advantage when he converted feeds from junior John Rocchio (East Greenwich, R.I.) and freshman goalie Jeff Rose (Collinsville, Conn.), as Pencinger’s marker made him the 10th player in Suffolk history to reach the 100-career point plateau. Junior Ryan Collins (Amesbury, Conn.) extended the Rams’ lead to 2-0 with just 10 seconds remaining in the opening stanza, but Southern New Hampshire netted three power play goals in a 1:13 span in the middle of the second period, including tallies off the sticks of senior Evan Williams (Gilford, N.H.) and DiBartolomeo that came 35 seconds apart to tie the score and a third by freshman Corey Hamblett (Milton, Vt.) at the 11:34 mark that gave the Penmen a 3-2 advantage. Pencinger’s second goal of the game, a power play strike that was again set up by Rocchio and Rose, evened matters for Suffolk with 35 seconds remaining in the middle stanza, and the teams played a scoreless third frame to set up Frey’s overtime heroics.
Hammermeister recorded a pair of assists in the win for Southern New Hampshire, which also received helpers off the sticks of Frey, junior Dave Carroll (Arlington, Mass.), sophomore Phil LaCasse (Concord, N.H.) and freshman Neil Adams (Gardner, Mass.). Pencinger assisted on Collins’s goal to finish with three points in the setback for Suffolk, and he also moved into a tie for sixth place on the Rams’ career goal scoring list with 55 markers. Rocchio’s two assist effort moved him into 10th place on the school’s career list with 61 helpers, while freshman Paul Weisser (Longmeadow, Mass.) also posted an assist for Suffolk. Rose’s two helpers give him three for the season in just 13 career games between the pipes for the Rams, as he also picked up an assist in his first collegiate contest back on November 6th in a win over Stonehill.
Junior Matt Courchesne (Bow, N.H.) picked up the win in goal for Southern New Hampshire with a 14-save effort, while Rose made 39 saves in net for Suffolk as the Penmen outshot the Rams by a 43-17 margin for the contest. Rose has now made 39 or more saves in his last three outings, including 40 in Friday’s first round Codfish Bowl setback to UMass Boston.
Suffolk will be idle until Tuesday, January 15th when the Rams head to Medford, Mass. to take on Tufts in a non-league match-up that begins at 7:30 p.m., while Southern New Hampshire heads to Winchendon, Mass. on Saturday, January 12th to take on Franklin Pierce in a non-league contest that faces-off at 4:30 p.m.
