SUFFOLK ICE HOCKEY
First Round – 43rd Annual Codfish Bowl Tournament
Friday, December 28, 2007
Clark Athletic Center, Boston, Mass.
FINAL: UMASS BOSTON 5, SUFFOLK 4
BOSTON, Mass.-- Freshman Eric Tufman’s (Abington, Pa.) goal with 1:38 remaining snapped the fourth tie of the contest and lifted UMass Boston to a 5-4 non-league college hockey victory over Suffolk in opening round play of the 43rd Annual Codfish Bowl Tournament Friday evening at the Clark Athletic Center.
The host Beacons (4-4-1) will take on Fitchburg State in Saturday afternoon’s championship game, as the Falcons advanced to the title tilt with a 5-0 triumph over Southern New Hampshire in Friday’s other opening round match-up.
Junior Kyle Cook (Chino Hills, Calif.) staked the visiting Rams (7-5) to a pair of first period advantages, as his power play marker with 5:41 remaining in the opening stanza countered a goal by UMass Boston freshman Ryan Huggett (Battle Creek, Mich.) and gave Suffolk a 2-1 edge after 20 minutes of play. Senior Kyle Simpson’s (Scituate, Mass.) shorthanded goal just 36 seconds into the middle period evened matters at 2-2 for the Beacons, but junior Mitch Sabo’s (Bell Canyon, Calif.) power play goal less than three minutes later gave the Rams their final lead of the night at 3-2. Sophomore Kris Kranzky (Glendora, Calif.) then netted a pair of goals in less than four minutes, the latter coming with 1:32 to play in the period, to give the hosts a 4-3 advantage after two, but freshman Tom Coulstring’s (Whitman, Mass.) first collegiate goal with 4:45 remaining enabled Suffolk to forge a 4-4 tie late in the contest, setting up Tufman’s heroics for UMass Boston.
Junior Rocco Dabecco (South Park, Pa.) registered a pair of assists in the win for the Beacons, who also received single helpers off the sticks of Kranzky, sophomore Steve Ebbole (Wheaton, Ill.) and freshmen John Galivan (Oak Park, Ill.), Zach Barron (St. Louis, Mo.), David Lun (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Dylan Scanlon (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Matt Atsoff (Macomb, Mich.). Cook added an assist to go with his two goals in finishing with three points in the setback for Suffolk, which also received a pair of helpers from freshman Paul Weisser (Longmeadow, Mass.) as well as single assists off the sticks of senior Andrew Redvanly (Hillsdale, N.J.), junior John Rocchio (East Greenwich, R.I.) and sophomores Joe Drago (Waltham, Mass.) and Nick Davis (Pittsburgh, Pa.).
Sophomore Ryan Donovan (Rexford, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal for UMass Boston with an 11-save effort, while freshman Jeff Rose (Collinsville, Conn.) made 41 stops in net for Suffolk as the Beacons outshot the Rams by a 46-15 margin for the contest. The win was UMass Boston’s second of the season over Suffolk, as the Beacons also notched a 2-1 triumph in the consolation round of the PAL Stovepipe Tournament back on November 25th in Hooksett, N.H.
Suffolk and Southern New Hampshire will meet in Saturday’s consolation round contest of the 43rd Annual Codfish Bowl Tournament at the Clark Athletic Center beginning at 2:00 p.m., as the UMass Boston-Fitchburg State championship match-up will follow at 5:00 p.m.
