Men's Basketball Drops 72-61 Non-League Decision At Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass.--  Senior Ryan Mauer (Pittsfield, Mass.) scored 19 points to lead four players in double figures as Westfield State posted a 72-61 non-league men’s college basketball victory over Suffolk Tuesday evening at the Woodward Center.

The host Owls (4-3) jumped out to an early 15-5 lead and maintained a double-digit edge for most of the opening half before settling for a 35-27 edge at the break, but the visiting Rams (1-6) scored 11 of the first 14 points following intermission to take a 38-37 lead on a pair of free throws by sophomore Alan Jaziri (Norwich, Conn.) with 16:30 remaining in the contest.  Westfield State regained the lead on a pair of occasions in the next two minutes of play, but Suffolk sliced its deficit to just a bucket twice in a four minute stretch, the last coming on a jumper by sophomore Josh Teixeira (Braintree, Mass.) with 10:26 to play, before the Owls used an 11-4 run over a 4:41 stretch to take a nine-point lead, as the Rams got no closer than five points in the final minutes of action.

Junior Matt Badjo (Worcester, Mass.) added 14 points in the win for Westfield State, which also received 12 points and eight rebounds from sophomore Drew Pereira (Seekonk, Mass.) as well as 11 points and seven boards from junior Dave Jaehnig (Quincy, Mass.).  Junior Chris Kinback (Shrewsbury, Mass.) chipped in with 10 assists and 10 rebounds for the Owls, who shot 43 percent from the field and held a 47-41 rebounding advantage for the contest.

Teixeira led all scorers with a double-double effort of 21 points and 10 rebounds in the setback for Suffolk, which also received 16 points from Jaziri as well as a second straight double-double performance by junior Brian Small (Stoughton, Mass.), who notched 10 points and 12 boards.  The Rams shot 36 percent from the field and canned five three-pointers but hurt themselves with 24 turnovers for the evening.

Suffolk travels to Henniker, N.H. on Thursday evening to take on New England College in a non-league outing that begins at 7:30 p.m., while Westfield State heads to Saratoga Springs, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon for a non-league match-up with Skidmore that begins at 3:00 p.m.
