FINAL: RIVIER 91, SUFFOLK 80
BOSTON, Mass.-- Senior Jeff Carpenter (Meredith, N.H.) scored 27 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead three players in double figures as Rivier notched a 91-80 victory over Suffolk in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Regan Gymnasium.
The visiting Raiders (2-2, 1-0 Great Northeast) blistered the nets at a 59 percent clip (20-34) in the opening 20 minutes of play in overcoming an early four point deficit en route to a 45-31 advantage at the break, and Rivier extended that margin to 17 points on a pair of occasions early after intermission before using a 20-10 run over a five minute stretch to take an 80-57 lead with 6:51 remaining in the contest. The host Rams (1-5, 0-1 Great Northeast) went on a 12-4 run of their own to slice their deficit to 12 points (84-72) and crept to within nine in the final minute of action, but six combined free throws by juniors Lance Bisson (Nashua, N.H.) and Kevin Harrington (Center Ossipee, N.H.) in the final 46 minutes iced the Raider triumph.
Bisson added 17 points, seven assists and six rebounds in the win for Rivier, which also received 15 points and eight boards from senior Danny Ford (Exeter, N.H.). Harrington chipped in with six points and seven rebounds for the Raiders, who shot 53 percent from the floor overall and scored 56 of their points in the paint while holding a 46-44 rebounding advantage for the afternoon.
Junior Brian Small (Stoughton, Mass.) led four players in double figures with a double-double effort of 21 points and 17 rebounds in the setback for Suffolk, which also received 19 points from sophomore Josh Teixeira (Braintree, Mass.) as well as 15 points and eight rebounds from freshman Mario Massimino (East Haven, Conn.). Sophomore Alan Jaziri (Norwich, Conn.) added 11 points for the Rams, who shot just 33 percent from the field and canned six three-pointers for the contest.
Suffolk heads to Westfield, Mass. on Tuesday evening to take on Westfield State in a non-league contest that begins at 7:30 p.m., while Rivier hosts Albertus Magnus in a Great Northeast outing on Tuesday evening in Nashua, N.H. that begins at 7:00 p.m.
