FINAL:  SUFFOLK 7, WORCESTER STATE 5

AUBURN, Mass.--  Senior Dan Pencinger (Randolph, N.J.) netted four goals, including the game-winner with 56 seconds remaining, to lift Suffolk to a 7-5 ECAC Northeast ice hockey victory over Worcester State Saturday afternoon at Horgan Rink.

Pencinger’s heroics enabled the visiting Rams (6-3, 4-0 ECAC Northeast) to remain one of three unbeaten teams in league play as well as continue their best start in five seasons, as he converted a feed from junior John Rocchio (East Greenwich, R.I.) on the game-winner and added an empty-netter with 10 seconds to play to account for the final score and complete a five-point performance.

After the host Lancers (1-7, 1-3 ECAC Northeast) grabbed a 1-0 lead midway through the opening stanza on a goal by freshman Ryan Hebert (Taunton, Mass.), Suffolk took a 2-1 advantage on goals by Pencinger and junior Kyle Cook (Chino Hills, Calif.) after the first 20 minutes of play.  Worcester State regained a 3-2 edge just 2:43 into the middle period on markers off the sticks of Hebert and junior William Knauber (Cheektowaga, N.Y.), but a power play goal by Pencinger followed by junior Michael Bourque’s (Waltham, Mass.) first tally of the season that came just 24 seconds apart lifted the Rams to a 4-3 lead after two.  The hosts evened matters 3:47 into the final period on sophomore Lee Belisle’s (Chicopee, Mass.) goal, but Suffolk took a 5-4 lead on senior Tim Dancey’s (Anaheim, Calif.) shorthanded goal with 3:45 remaining in the contest.  The Lancers forged the final tie of the night with 2:14 to play on a goal by freshman Bobby Housser (Leominster, Mass.), setting up Pencinger’s final two tallies for the Rams.

Pencinger’s effort enabled him to become the 10th player in school history to reach the 50-goal plateau for Suffolk, which is now just one win shy of matching its entire victory total of last season.  Dancey added a pair of assists to his goal to finish with three points for the Rams, which also received two helpers each from Rocchio and freshman Tom Coulstring (Whitman, Mass.) as well as single assists off the sticks of Cook and junior Mitch Sabo (Bell Canyon, Calif.).

Knauber, Housser and senior Nathan Perreault (Smithfield, R.I.) joined Hebert in recording two points in the setback for Worcester State, which also received single assists off the sticks of junior Tom Ford (North Grafton, Mass.) as well as freshmen Billy O’Neill (Wayne, Pa.) and Joe Pessa (Hanover, Mass.).

Freshman Jeff Rose (Collinsville, Conn.) picked up his sixth win of the season with a 24-save effort in goal for Suffolk, while junior Jason Richardson (Perkasie, Pa.) made 26 stops in net for Worcester State as the Rams outshot the Lancers by a 33-29 margin.  The win was Suffolk’s second over Worcester State this season, with the other coming by an 8-4 margin back on November 10th at the UBS Paine Webber Classic.

Suffolk hosts Salve Regina in an ECAC Northeast outing on Tuesday evening at Walter Brown Arena beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Worcester State travels to Fitchburg, Mass. on Wednesday evening to take on Fitchburg State in an ECAC Northeast match-up that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
