Ice Hockey Works Overtime For Win At Franklin Pierce

WINCHENDON, Mass.--  Sophomore Nick Davis’s (Pittsburgh, Pa.) goal 1:27 into overtime lifted Suffolk to a 5-3 ECAC Northeast ice hockey victory over Franklin Pierce Wednesday evening at Broadhurst Arena.

Davis converted feeds from senior Tim Dancey (Anaheim, Calif.) and junior Kyle Cook (Chino Hills, Calif.) on the deciding tally for the visiting Rams (5-3, 3-0 ECAC Northeast), who snapped a two-game skein and continued their best start in five seasons with the triumph.  After a scoreless opening 20 minutes of action, goals by Dancey and fellow senior Dan Pencinger (Randolph, N.J.) in the first 12:03 of the middle stanza gave Suffolk a 2-0 advantage after two, but senior Peter Wilson’s (Marshfield, Mass.) power play goal midway through the third period sliced the host Ravens’ (1-6, 0-4 ECAC Northeast) deficit in half.  Pencinger’s second score of the night extended the Rams’ edge to 3-1 with 6:17 remaining in regulation, and after sophomore Phil LaBreck’s (Thornton, N.H.) goal just over a minute made it 3-2, sophomore Rob Perretta (Staten Island, N.Y.) forced the extra session for Franklin Pierce by tallying with 1:09 to play in regulation, setting up Davis’s heroics in the overtime period.

Pencinger became the 14th player in school history to eclipse the 90-point plateau with his two tallies in the win for Suffolk, which didn’t claim its fifth victory of last season until late January.  Junior John Rocchio (East Greenwich, R.I.) assisted on three goals in the triumph for the visitors, who also received a goal and an assist from Dancey as well as single helpers off the sticks of junior Mitch Sabo (Bell Canyon, Calif.), sophomore Brian Smusz (Daleville, Va.) and freshman Zach Scienzo (Concord, N.H.).

LaBreck notched a goal and an assist in the setback for Franklin Pierce, which also received single assists from seniors Trevor Clark (Randolph, Mass.) and Joseph Fields (Towamencin, Pa.), juniors Shane Murphy (Tolland, Conn.) and Jeff Kasper (South Boston, Mass.) as well as sophomore Casey Goodell (Rochester, N.Y.).

Freshman Jeff Rose (Collinsville, Conn.) picked up his fifth win of the season in goal with an 18-save effort for Suffolk, while freshman Matt McCarthy (Natick, Mass.) made 30 stops in net for Franklin Pierce as the Rams outshot the Ravens by a 34-21 margin.

Suffolk, which is tied with UMass Dartmouth and Wentworth for second place in the league standings, heads to Auburn, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to take on Worcester State in an ECAC Northeast outing that begins at 4:30 p.m., while Franklin Pierce travels to Framingham, Mass. on Saturday evening to take on Framingham State in an ECAC Northeast match-up that faces-off at 7:30 p.m.
