The Ice Den, Hooksett, N.H.
FINAL: UMASS BOSTON 2, SUFFOLK 1
HOOKSETT, N.H.-- Sophomore Adam Larrabee (Beverly, Mass.) scored a pair of goals to back a 30-save effort by fellow sophomore Ryan Donovan (Rexford, N.Y.) in net to lead UMass Boston to a 2-1 non-league college hockey victory over Suffolk in consolation round play of the 2007 PAL Stovepipe Tournament Sunday afternoon at The Ice Den. Plymouth State claimed the championship of the tournament with a 3-1 victory over host Southern New Hampshire in Sunday’s title contest.
Larrabee gave the Beacons (1-3) a 1-0 first period advantage when he converted feeds from freshmen Eric Tufman (Abington, Pa.) and Dylan Scanlon (Longmeadow, Mass.) for a power play marker at the 9:38 mark, and he extended UMass Boston’s lead just 33 seconds into the middle stanza with another man-advantage tally on assists from sophomore Russ Peterson (Fraser, Mich.) and freshman Matt Atsoff (Macomb, Mo.). Junior Kyle Cook (Chino Hills, Calif.) sliced the Rams’ (4-3) deficit in half with a power play goal of his own after converting passes from senior Dan Pencinger (Randolph, N.J.) and junior John Rocchio (East Greenwich, R.I.) with 2:27 remaining in the contest, but that was as close as Suffolk would come despite holding a 16-4 edge in shots in the final 20 minutes.
Donovan recorded 22 of his saves in the final two periods in the triumph for UMass Boston, while freshman Jeff Rose (Collinsville, Conn.) made 25 stops in net for Suffolk as the Rams outshot the Beacons by a 31-27 margin.
Suffolk heads to Winchendon, Mass. on Wednesday evening to take on Franklin Pierce in an ECAC Northeast outing that begins at 8:00 p.m., while UMass Boston travels to Framingham, Mass. on Tuesday evening to take on Framingham State in a non-league contest that begins at 7:20 p.m.
