NORTHFIELD, Vt.-- Junior Rob Harlow (West Springfield, Mass.) netted a hat trick to help top-seeded Norwich advance to the championship round of the 2007 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Championships with a 5-1 victory over fifth-seeded Suffolk in league semi-final round play Wednesday afternoon at Howard Field.
The host Cadets, now 16-2-1 overall, will host second-seeded Johnson & Wales in Saturday’s title match, as the Wildcats advanced with a 2-1 win over third-seeded Lasell in Wednesday’s other semi-final contest.
Junior Bobby Begin (Hardwick, Mass.) gave Norwich a 1-0 lead just 3:09 into action when he converted a pass from sophomore Jake Yaris (Raymond, N.H.), and Harlow extended the Cadet lead to 3-0 with a pair of markers that came in the 17th and 36th minutes, respectively. Junior Drew Dilley (Columbia, Pa.) gave the hosts a 4-0 edge at the break when he converted a pass from freshman Ryan Boyton (Dunedin, Fla.) in the 39th minute, and Harlow completed his hat trick just 1:52 following intermission to close out the Norwich scoring.
Sophomore Nick Celia (Hanson, Mass.) provided the lone tally of the day for the visiting Rams, who finish the season at 9-7 overall, as he notched an unassisted marker in the 62nd minute of action to finish the year with the team leads in both goals (10) and points (27).
Senior Jake Pagragan (Richland, Ind.) picked up the win in goal for Norwich with an eight-save effort and chipped in with a pair of assists on two of Harlow’s goals for the hosts, while freshman Jack DeJesus (Swampscott, Mass.) made seven stops in net for Suffolk as the Cadets outshot the Rams by a 26-14 margin for the match.
Suffolk advanced to the Great Northeast semi-finals for the second straight season under Head Coach Nick Papadopoulos, who has led the Rams to five consecutive post-season berths overall.
