BOSTON, Mass.-- Sophomore Nick Celia’s (Hanson, Mass.) goal 5:30 into overtime lifted Suffolk to a 2-1 Great Northeast Athletic Conference men’s soccer victory over Emmanuel Tuesday evening at Boston English High School.
Celia’s fifth marker of the season that came on a broken play gave the visiting Rams (5-3, 3-2 Great Northeast) their second straight triumph and third in the last four contests, as senior Marco D’Andrea (Belmont, Mass.) had given Suffolk an early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute of action with his fifth goal of the season on a feed from fellow senior Marco Panza (Watertown, Mass.), but the host Saints (3-7, 1-4 Great Northeast) evened matters with just 25 seconds remaining before intermission when senior Mark Iannucci (Kingston, Mass.) converted a pass from freshman Andrew Clark (Cohasset, Mass.). The two teams played a scoreless second half before Celia’s heroics in the extra session gave the Rams the triumph.
Freshman Jack DeJesus (Swampscott, Mass.) picked up his fifth win of the season in goal for Suffolk with a six-save effort, while freshman Carlos Perez (Boca Raton, Fla.) also made six stops in net for Emmanuel as the Saints outshot the Rams by a 12-8 margin for the match.
Suffolk hosts Southern Vermont in a non-league match on Saturday evening at Danehy Park in Cambridge, Mass. beginning at 6:30 p.m., while Emmanuel heads to Nashua, N.H. on Saturday afternoon to take on Rivier in a Great Northeast outing that begins at Noon.
