SOMERVILLE, Mass.-- Senior Sam Sheppard’s (West Haven, Conn.) goal 3:58 into play held up as the game-winner and lifted Albertus Magnus to a 2-1 Great Northeast Athletic Conference women’s soccer victory over Suffolk Wednesday afternoon at Dilboy Stadium.
After freshman Sam Gigliotti (Wilton, Conn.) converted a feed from junior Brittany Collard (North Haven, Conn.) just 2:10 into the contest to give the visiting Falcons (5-1, 3-1 Great Northeast) an early 1-0 lead, Sheppard extended Albertus Magnus’s edge to 2-0 just 1:48 later when she took a pass from freshman Ashley Velazquez (New Haven, Conn.). Freshman Anna Hartmann (Strafford, N.H.) sliced the host Rams’ (0-3, 0-3 Great Northeast) in half with her first collegiate marker, an unassisted tally from 20 yards out, at the 6:42 mark, and that would prove to be all of the scoring for the match, though both teams had a pair of solid scoring chances in the final 20 minutes of action.
Freshman Christina Oddo (East Haven, Conn.) picked up the win in goal for Albertus Magnus with a five-save effort, while sophomore Meghan McDonald (Easton, Mass.) also made five stops in her first collegiate start in net for Suffolk as the Falcons outshot the Rams by an 11-7 margin for the match.
Suffolk heads across town to take on Emerson in a Great Northeast match on Saturday afternoon in Boston beginning at 12:30 p.m., while Albertus Magnus travels to Northfield, Vt. on Saturday afternoon to take on Norwich in a Great Northeast outing that begins at 3:00 p.m.
