Requirements for the Major

 

Majors must complete 40 credits of coursework (usually ten courses).

 

This coursework should include two courses from one of the following sequences (ideally completed by the end of the sophomore year):

 

• HST 101-102 History of Western Civilization I, II

• HST 121-122 World History I, II

• HST 149-150 Empires and Globalization I, II
• HST 181-182 American History I, II

 

All majors must also take (preferably during the sophomore year but not later than first semester of the junior year):

 

• HST 200 Gateway to the Past: The Historian’s Craft.

 

Majors must also complete seven upper-level history (200-level or above) courses, (28 credits) including one “capstone” course taken in the senior year.

 

Capstone Course Options:

 

• HST 400 Doing History
• HST 450 Senior Seminar in History
• HST H555 Senior Honors Thesis (See requirements under Honors in History)

 

History Concentration

 

The History Department has particular strengths in the areas of American, European, African-American, and Asian History, as well as in the history of women and gender and public history. Students have the ability to engage in focused study in one of these domains by taking several upper-level courses in a particular area of study.
