Softball Plays At Simmons Wednesday In Tourney

Suffolk, the eighth seed in the 2007 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Softball Tournament, plays No. 5 seed Simmons in a one-game tournament play-in Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Pine Manor Field. Wednesday's winner faces No. 3 seed Emerson Friday at 3 p.m. in Springfield, MA on the campus of Western New England.

The Rams, 15-21 overall, 10-12 in GNAC play, finished in a tie for sixth in the GNAC standings with Norwich and St. Joseph CT, but dropped to eighth after the head-to-head tie breaker. Suffolk lost two games last weekend to Simmons. A win on Wednesday would put Suffolk into the double elimination portion of the GNAC tournament bracket.

Suffolk loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth inning against reliever Maureen Mikos. A Marie Trainor (Winthrop, MA) sacrifice fly to right field scored Jenna Mourey (Rochester, NY) to give the Rams a 6-4 lead. Ferreira followed with a big two-run double, scoring Jackie Zwicker (South Easton, MA) and Erin O'Donell (Groton, MA) to make it an 8-4 game. Ferreira later came around to score, thanks to an error by the shortstop on a Valerie Liberatore (Chelsea, MA) grounder, to cap off the 9-4 win.

Lesley trailed 4-2 in the top of the fifth. Alicia Pari scored on a pass ball to cut the lead to 4-3. Jodi Fralick added a sacrifice fly to left
field to tie the game at 4-4.

Schalit was 2-4 on the afternoon. An RBI triple from Zwicker put Suffolk ahead 3-2. She later scored on an error from the shortstop. Zwicker finished her afternoon 2-2 with a walk and an RBI.

Kellie Hurlock's (East Lyme, CT) inside the park home run over the head of the Lesley right fielder gave the Rams their first run of the day. Hurlock was 2-3.

Mourey retired eight out of the last nine batters she faced to pick up the win for Suffolk. Christina Anzilotti picked up the loss for Lesley.
