Softball Awaits Final Standings for GNAC Tourney

Suffolk beat St. Joseph's ME in a Sunday softball doubleheader to move to 14-21 overall. The Rams have finished their Great Northeast Athletic Conference games with a 10-12 record. Suffolk will play in a GNAC Tournament Play-in game on Wednesday, April 25.

The top four GNAC seeds get a bye into the double elimination tournament, but seeds 5-8 must playoff to determine the final two spots in the GNAC tournament.

Suffolk is currently seeded seventh, with many teams still playing conference games on Monday and Tuesday because of weather delays. The Rams host Lesley in their final home non-conference game on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Puopolo Field.

Against St. Joseph, Suffolk won game one, 4-1 and then took the second game 9-4. The two teams were deadlocked at 1-1 in game one through the first five and 1/3 before the Rams scored three runs in the sixth to pull out the 4-1 victory. Ashley Gaboriault (Sutton, MA) and Valerie Liberatore (Chelsea, MA) began the inning with back-to-back singles. Liberatore finished the game two for three.

Rebecca Schalit (Miami, FL) followed up the hits with a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher. But, St. Joe’s starter Gabrielle Burrola overthrew the first baseman, allowing pinch runner Kellie Hurlock (East Lyme, CT) to score the game-winning run.

Rachel Misuraca (Gloucester, MA) put the dagger in St. Joe’s with a two-run single to score Liberatore and Schalit, making it a 4-1 game.

Suffolk starting pitcher Jess Ferreira (Cambridge, MA) pitched brilliantly, striking out 14 and allowing just one run on six hits in her complete game victory. She was one for three at the plate.

The Rams had trailed 1-0 in the fourth inning when Liberatore hit a solo shot over the left field wall to tie the game at 1-1.

Megan Farrell’s RBI single in the first was St. Joe’s lone run of the game.

The Rams fell behind 4-0 in Game 2, but scored six runs in the third and three more in the sixth to win 9-4.

Gaboriault started the Suffolk rally with an infield RBI single to score lead off hitter Erin O’Donell (Groton, MA). She was two for three with 3 RBI. Another infield RBI single from Schalit with the bases loaded scored Ferreira, to make it a 4-2 game.

The bases remained loaded with just one out when Hurlock came through with a big three-run triple to give her team a 5-4 lead. Hurlock was a perfect three for three with 3 RBI at the plate. She later came around to score on a Jackie Zwicker (South Easton, MA) RBI single to make it a 6-4 game. Zwicker was two for three at the plate.

The Rams continued their onslaught with a three-run sixth. Ferreira stole home to make it a 7-4 game. Gaboriault added a two-run single, scoring O’Donell and Marie Trainor (Winthrop, MA) to make it a 9-4 game. Trainor finished her afternoon with four hits.

Ferreira made her second start of the afternoon and struggled in the early going, allowing four runs in the first three innings. However, she bounced back nicely allowing no runs in the final four innings of her complete game victory.

St. Joe’s got their offense going with two runs in the second inning. Tessa Grindle had an RBI single and Amanda Roy added a sacrifice fly. St. Joe’s scored two more runs in the third thanks to a two-run triple off the bat of Farrell who finished her afternoon with three of her teams five RBI.
