Suffolk's baseball team moved into the top spot in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference race with a double header win over Norwich Saturday at Adams Field in Quincy, MA.
The Rams won the first game 13-6, taking a 11-0 lead after two innings. Suffolk scored six runs in the first inning on five walks. Junior outfielder Greg DiMarco (Newton, MA) drove in two runs with a single in the inning.
In the second inning, Suffolk added five more runs as junior catcher Nick Martinho (Middleton, MA) tripled, senior designated hitter Marc Exarhopoulos (Hudson, MA) singled and DiMarco doubled to highlight the inning. Suffolk starting pitcher Joe Roberto (Danvers, MA) went the distance for win.
Norwich starter Chris Pybus suffered the loss. The Cadets scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning and added three more in the seventh. Outfielder Rob Knox doubled to drive in two runs in the seventh. Catcher Aaron Ward went three for four at the plate and scored two runs. Designated hitter Donovan Brown was two for three with one run scored.
Suffolk took game two, 9-0, with sophomore Jake Bruce (Amesbury, MA) pitching six shutout innings and freshman Tom Kelly (Milton, MA) coming in in relief in the seventh. Martinho lead the offense with two hits and two RBI. Nick Chioffi (Burlington, VT) also added two hits including an RBI double in the 6th. Jeison King (Lowell, MA) also added two RBI and scored on a balk in a four-run second inning.
Norwich left 11 runners on base in the second game. Alex Duplessis had two hits and Kyle Kenia had the other as Norwich could only manage three hits against Bruce. Tim O'Connor was the losing pitcher, going 4 1/3 innings and allowing 9 Rams hits. He was relieved by Kyle Prezekaza in the 5th who retired five of the six Suffolk hitters he faced.
The Rams move to 8-2 in GNAC games, 16-8 overall. Norwich drops to 2-6 in GNAC games, 3-13 overall.
