Dan Pencinger (Randolph, NJ) and John Rocchio (East Greenwich, RI) led Suffolk to a 2-2 tie with Nichols Sunday at Walter Brown Arena, each scoring a goal and an assist.
Before the game the team honored three seniors and their families. Team captain John Delaney (Quincy MA) spent four years at Suffolk. Senior goalie Sean Bertoni (Franklin, MA) and senior Carl Ellis (Gloucester, MA) were also honored.
Freshman goalie Bill Gilbert (Forestdale, MA) in just his second start played a strong game. He recorded 41 saves, which he also did in his first start against Plymouth State earlier in the week.
The tie allowed Suffolk to hold onto the 8th playoff spot in the ECAC Northeast. The Rams are battling with Salve Regina for final berth and are currently ahead by one point.
Nichols started the scoring in the second period when forward Anthony Monte netted his 21st goal of the season on a power play. Suffolk also took advantage of a power play opportunity when junior forward Dan Pencinger scored to tie the game; the goal was his 18th on the season.
The Rams wasted no time taking the lead early in the third on a goal by sophomore forward John Rocchio. Good goaltending kept the game at a stand still until Kyle Cook slipped the tying goal past Gilbert with six and a half minutes left to play.
After a scoreless overtime period the game resulted in a tie, the second between these two teams this year. It allowed Suffolk to gain an extra point in the standings. The Rams are currently 7-13-2 overall and 6-6-1 in the ECAC Northeast.
