• "Native New Yorkers"

Native New Yorkers, at the New England School of Art & Design gallery,  features the work of New York artists Jeffrey Gibson, Peter Jemison, Jason Lujan, and Mario Martinez and special guest Jaune Quick To See Smith of New Mexico.

There is a great debate within the Native American community concerning what is considered as sacred, ceremonial, and private and what aspects of Native art and culture may be disclosed to academic researchers or journalists and revealed to the general public.

These issues richly inform the work of this outstanding selection of contemporary artists. They often opt for abstract and surreal creations as a means of both referencing and abstracting  traditional and religious feelings.

While Native Americans are commonly associated with vast reservations in the Southwest, what is less well known is a strong urban presence in major American cities. In many instances the best and brightest artists have gravitated to New York City to establish careers in the art world.

About the artists

Both Mario Martinez and Jeffery Gibson make large, colorful, surreal abstract paintings.

Gibson also has  explored sculpture, including a large relief piece attached to the exterior of the Aldrich Museum of Art as a part its recent exhibition “No Reservations.”

Jason Lujan makes conceptual pieces in a range of media from photography through video.

Peter Jemison, a mid-career artist, has primarily pursued painting and graphic design. In the past couple of years Jemison, who runs the Seneca historic site, Ganondagan, in upstate New York, has started to make video art.

Jaune Quick To See Smith is widely known for her many museum-level exhibitions. She will be represented by a work created for an exhibition last year in this program.
