Rene Cheatam's rebound and lay in with 2 seconds remaining off a Jerrold Williams missed jumper gave the Norwich Men's Basketball team a 76-74 victory over Suffolk University Saturday afternoon at Suffolk's Regan Gymnasium. John Murphy's (North Reading, MA) three-point attempt from half court to win the game fell well short, wrapping up the conference victory for Norwich.
Cheatam finished the game with 21 points and 12 rebounds on 8-16 shooting, while Williams dropped in 23 points to lead his team. Murphy led all scorers in the game with 25 points. Murphy is currently averaging 24.0 points per game.
The Cheatam game-winner came just 41 seconds after Murphy hit a fade away jumper to tie the game at 74-74.
Suffolk trailed 74-68 with under two minutes to go, however, Brad Schoonmaker (Southington, CT) nailed two free-throws and Murphy hit another two free-throws to cut the lead to 74-72, setting up Murphy's game-tying shot.
Norwich took a 70-61 lead with 3:27 remaining thanks to a Williams two-pointer. Suffolk fought back with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to just 70-68 with 2:21 to go. Freshman Alan Jaziri (Norwich, CT) had four of his 13 points during the run and Schoonmaker added a three.
Norwich led 39-34 at the half despite giving up a buzzer-beating lay up to Brian Small (Stoughton, MA). Small finished the game with 9 points.
Norwich quickly increased their halftime lead to a 50-39 lead with 17:13 left in the second half.
Chris MacDonald added 12 points on 5-10 shooting in the loss for Suffolk. Jamel Bedford and Mike Filipek each contributed with 10 points on a combined 9-16 shooting for Norwich.
Suffolk dropped to 5-5 in the GNAC and 6-12 overall, while Norwich is 5-4 in the GNAC and 8-8 overall.
