Women Lose to UMass Boston in final seconds Thursday

Junior guard LaKeisha Tucker (Pawtucket, RI) (nine) and senior forward Denise B. Ridge (Milton, MA) (six) combined to score the final 15 points in the last four minutes of action to pace the University of Massachusetts Boston women’s basketball team to a 71-69 comeback victory over visiting Suffolk University tonight at the Clark Athletic Center on the UMass Boston campus.  The Beacons have won six of their last seven games and improve to 11-7 on the season, while the Rams’ six-game win streak comes to an end as they fall to 10-6.

Tucker knocked down a three-pointer with 2:38 left to play in the game to pull UMass Boston even at 63-63 and bring the Beacons all the way back from an 11-point deficit.  The teams would trade baskets over the next 2:32 with Ridge scoring all six of UMass Boston’s points to give the team a 69-67 lead with 17 seconds left, before Meghan Tracey made a lay-up for Suffolk to knot the game at 69-69 with six seconds left.  The Beacons inbounded the ball to Tucker, who was fouled with 2.6 seconds left in the game and then proceeded to sink a pair of free throws to give her 26 straight made free throws and UMass Boston a 71-69 lead.  The Rams had a three-point try to end the contest, but it was off the mark as the Beacons came away with the win.

UMass Boston owned a 21-16 lead with 6:24 showing in the first half, but Suffolk ripped off nine straight points in less than two minutes to take a 25-21 margin with 4:43 left in the first half.  The teams played within four points for the remainder of the half, before Tucker hit a jumper just before the half to give the Beacons a 30-29 edge at the break, which was a good omen for UMB which is now 9-0 when leading at the half this season.

The Beacons owned a 33-31 margin with 19:03 showing on the second half clock, but the Rams went on a 19-6 run, capped by a three-pointer from Jenn Fogg and fueled by 10 points from Stephanie Zito, to give them a 50-39 advantage with 11:54 to play in the second stanza.  Suffolk maintained a 51-43 lead with 10:03 to go in the half, before UMass Boston reeled off seven unanswered points to pull to within one at 51-50 at 8:07 of the second session.  The Rams regrouped and built their lead back to 63-54 with 4:44 remaining in the contest, but The Beacons went on another furious run with nine straight points, paced by seven points from Tucker, including the three-pointer to tie it at 63-all.
